23 Jul Samsung Galaxy A8
Just as the dust settled after the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge and Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung decided enough time has passed where no new phone was introduced. They have just announced and added their latest insult to injury for Apple with the newly designed and incredibly awesome looking Samsung Galaxy A8 A800F. While it is expected to hit the markets worldwide in the third quarter of 2015, some devices are already being made available in China and have been forwarded for testing.
It seems that Samsung has listened to any and all rumours regarding the forthcoming Apple iPhone, no matter if the name is supposed to be iPhone 6S or iPhone 7, and implemented all highly demanded features into the Samsung Galaxy A8, just to spite Apple and to mock iPhone users, because most of the announced changes are not expected to be implemented anyway, at least not in 2015.
There are two things you immediately see, once you have the Galaxy A8 in your hands: the display goes almost entirely edge to edge and it is uncannily thin. The 5.7 inches AMOLED display has an almost 74% screen to body ratio at a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels with an approximate 386 ppi pixel density. Inside is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with the octa-core CPU and the Adreno 405 GPU. You can get 16 GB or 32 GB internal storage variants, with 2 GB of RAM. Storage is expandable per integrated microSD card slot.
The primary camera is 16 MP, the secondary 5 MP. The Samsung Galaxy A8 will have the fingerprint scanner gadget, with all the bells and whistles like the big Galaxy S6. The internal Li-Ion battery is non-removable and will most likely have a capacity of 3050 mAh. The latest Android OS, Lollipop, in the version 5.1 is factory installed, with all the usual Samsung bloatware, including their ghastly TouchWiz launcher. Some people do like that interface, granted, it is colourful, but it is also way to slow. Just try using your Samsung phone with the Google Now launcher and notice the difference, you will never go back.
The most shocking feature is the thin build of the smartphone, with only 5.9 mm thickness, the Samsung Galaxy A8 is the thinnest Samsung smartphone currently on the market. Only 151 grams weight is very, very light, despite the metal encasing. There is also the other thing that will most likely irk Apple. If you recall, just about at the time Apple decided to switch from metal to some form of a polymer, HTC One came out with the full Aluminium body and took the smartphone of the year award for two years in a row. The Samsung Galaxy A series concept is to have all metallic phones, that their gimmick. Now having an all metallic phone arrive on market in advance of the iPhone release, having all the features that Apple did not announce, but which “leaked” as specs that are expected and were supposed to be featured in their next iPhone incarnation, this blow must really, really hurt.
In any way, the Samsung Galaxy A8 is a wonderful and very handsome looking phone. The prospective mid-range pricing and classification is next to sensational and will most likely bring even more turmoil to the tumultuous marketplace.
